CFC Summer School: Where Amazing Happens

I am so excited to post an entry for the CFC Summer School. Facebook page here. It’s one of the best things you can be involved in. Not only will you be able to give and serve the community but you will be richly trained and blessed. This post is not so much to advertise to the parents to send their kids but to urge CFC people to join and serve.

The CFC Summer School is now entering its 9th year as a community outreach program for children and families in the Champaign-Urbana community. The summer school has come a long way from its humble beginning of 50 children to over 150 children from various religious, ethnic, and social backgrounds. Over the last 9 years, God has blessed us with the staff and resources to serve over 1,000 children that have passed through the program each year. Every summer, about 60 teachers and volunteers work tirelessly to teach, chaperone, minister, and play with kids, initiating relationships with students and their families.

The five-week program runs from 8:30 – 3:00 with a ½ day of academic instruction and a ½ day of activities, culminating in a week-long vacation bible school. For many students, this week is the only time that they have heard or will ever hear about the message of Jesus Christ, and it is our hope that through their summer experience, children and their families will be more open to the gospel.

You can help out in so many ways: head teacher, teacher’s aide, elective teacher, clean up crew, cook, activity aide, etc. Basically, if you’re willing to serve, you have a place at CFC Summer School. We will run a background check on you though since you are working with kids :) .

If you’re interested at all, and you know you are, don’t wait to sign up! Turn on your laptop, get your blackberry/iphone out and shoot an email to summerschool@cfchome.org as soon as you can! You can be a part witnessing God change young lives. I’m telling you – it’s where amazing happens.

Recap

The Vision of Summer School:

  1. To reach out to the community around us by offering a quality program as a means of sharing God’s love. We believe that the quality of our work will reflect the value and worth of Christ.
  2. To train workers on many different levels: developing quality teachers, giving people opportunities to serve, building unity through a common goal and purpose, and fostering relationships with one another as well as the students.
  3. To raise up the next generation of believers and equipping these children to stand firm in a changing world.

We consider it a high calling and privilege to impact the next generation of leaders, and more importantly, believers of Christ. With so many other views, ideas, and people that influence children, we realize that ministering to them is such an important and urgent ministry. We continue to be thankful for the leadership, vision, and support our church community has provided over the years. We hope that you will consider partnering with us again this summer through your prayers and time.

Prayer Requests

  1. Staff. Pray for the many volunteers (kitchen help, teachers, chaperones, activity leaders, administration, etc.) as each person is integral to the successful operation of the summer.  Pray for single-minded vision, Christ-likeness, and absolute dependence on God in every part of the day.
  2. Children and their families. Pray for the many children that will participate this summer as well as their families, especially those children dealing with difficult situations (divorce, financial issues, abuse, neglect, single-parent homes, etc.).  Pray for sensitivity from the staff as well as open eyes to see the needs of the children at summer school.
  3. Logistics. Pray for all the different things that need to be taken care of from registration, paperwork, relationships with community organizations, worship, teaching structures, food preparation, and activities.  With the many different tasks at hand, pray for wisdom and organization.
